Ceratophyllum demersum

This dark green submerged aquatic species is also known as Hornwort. It is a rootless perennial plant with extensive ecological importance. Ducks rely on the Coontail fruits for a source of food while it supplies a habitat for aquatic micro and macro invertebrates. Coontail can develop a dense coverage causing waterway problems and the potential to become invasive. In excess, it can produce an undesirable scummy appearance on the water’s surface reducing the amount of open water. Coontail grows underwater with leaves that sometimes reach the surface. The hollow stem has stiff olive-green leaves typically long and infrequent, but producing numerous whorled leaves at the tip of the branch giving it a bushy appearance. The leaves are spiny and should not be confused with the similar weed, Watermilfoil.
