Algae blooms cause considerable problems for lakes, ponds and other waterways every year leading to decreased oxygen levels and possible fish kills. Filamentous Algae develops green mats on the surface water. Visually, it looks slimy and thread-like. Single cells connect to one another developing its characteristic long filaments that can attach to anything it touches. Numerous species of Filamentous Algae exist. Including Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Spirogyra and Lyngbya.
