Chara Fragilis

Often mistaken for a plant, Chara, is actually an advanced algae. Environmental benefits include providing food for both fish and waterfowl species. It also helps stabilize bottom sediments. Though it can increase the quality of water, Chara can become problematic due to its characteristic rapid growth. In such cases, it reduces habitats for fish and can effect recreational activities. Chara has an easily identifiable musky odor. It is grayish green in color and will not appear emerged. It has whorled, cylindrical branches with approximately 6 to 16 small branchlets. It is gritty and crunchy to the touch.
