Azolla caroliniana winter

Resembling a moss more than a typical fern, Azolla, is a small (1/2 inch across or less) free-floating fern. It is a rapid-grower and can form dense mats on the water’s surface. The small lacy leaves either green or reddish in color typically overlap forming the large mat. The native species has a root extending from every stem. However, the stems are typically not visible due to the overlapping nature of the plant. This species has the capability of covering the entire pond surface and should be managed accordingly as oxygen level reduction can cause fish kills.
