Scirpus atrovirens

Growing up to 10 feet tall in shallow waters, this perennial plant appears grass-like forming thick colonies. Bulrush reproduces from rhizomes. The soft stem appears light grey to green in color. Distinct reddish brown flowers are produced just beneath the stem tip blooming from June to September. Fruits containing seeds then replace the shaggy flowers. Bulrush seeds provide an excellent food source for many waterfowl.
