Eelgrass can become problematic when its dense submerged “meadows” interfere with recreational activities. It is native to the U.S. and provides excellent cover for many fish as well as a food source for birds and other wildlife. The dark-green leaves are slender with a width of 1/2 to 1 inch. The blades have a round tip and raised veins. It is easily identified by its long runners. Leaf blades are attached to a stem that lies horizontally on the water floor. It reproduces via rhizomes allowing it to spread quickly which can lead to the elimination of other aquatic plants.
