This perennial plant is predominately submerged with sparse floating leaves. It provides both food and cover for native aquatic animals. Found in ponds, lakes and rivers the tuber is an excellent food source for waterfowl. It can become problematic reducing water temperature and oxygen levels when the species dies late summer. It can also develop dense coverage blocking sunlight from other submerged plants. Recreational waterway use can also be interrupted. The submerged green leaves are either oval shaped or lance-like and directly connected to the stem or on a stalk. Identifying characteristics include the numerous veins (9-19) and many leaves have a sharp tip.
