Typically 2 to 3 feet in height, Pickerelweed is a common native aquatic plant. It has large shiny green lance-shaped or heart-shaped leaves growing up to 7 inches long and 5 inches wide. Each of the stems on this perennial plant can produce a spike with a distinguishing violet tubular flower growing up to 4 inches long. Pickerelweed flowers throughout the year and each flower lives only one day. Reproduction occurs via rhizomes and seeds. This native species can cover large areas of open water.
