Increased levels of nitrogen and phosphorus lead to large Planktonic Algae blooms in which it develops a mat-like scum on the surface water appearing blue-green or green in color. In severe cases it can thicken the water resembling “pea soup”. Planktonic Algae includes Aphanizomenon, Closterium, Anabaena and Chlamydomonas. Planktonic Algae does have considerable importance as it is considered the starting point of the pond food chain. It is in severe blooms where management options need to be implemented.
