Smartweed is a native perennial aquatic plant that can produce dense coverage in Southern states and grows up to 3 feet tall. Green colored lancelet leaves are alternately positioned and grow up to 4 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. A distinguishing characteristic is its jointed stems with leaf nodes that are swollen. Erect flowers are produced on spikes beginning as a green color then turning white or pinkish. Smartweed has many ecological benefits such as shoreline erosion prevention, shelter for fish and its seeds are an excellent food source for certain wildlife.
